CONTINUING EDUCATION for YOGA TEACHERS:

TEACHING CHAIR YOGA March 21 and 22, 2015


March 21, 10:30-5:30: Chair Yoga for the Chronically Ill
. Julia will discuss working with those who are dealing with cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Alexandra Oudheusden, a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and Integrative Yoga Therapist from Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, will speak from her experience of teaching yoga to people with MS and those recovering from stroke. Mudras and guided visualizations for pain will be included, as well as an overview of primary chronic illnesses and resources for further learning.

March 22, 10:30-5:30: Chair Yoga for the Elderly. The first half will focus on yoga for active seniors who may be limited due to arthritis and age-related creakiness. Learn asana adaptations using the chair to adapt to limited flexibility. The second half will prepare you for teaching people in their 80s and 90s. Learn seated movements and resistance exercises for strength as well as standing poses for balance. Julia will provide guidance for enhancing range of motion, providing stress relief and sharpening students’ focus.

What do you do for supine poses when someone in your class has vertigo? How can you make a student comfortable in child pose when he has foot cramps? Or another has knee issues? What can students with wrist problems do for downward facing dog? Julia will address these questions and teach various modifications for many beloved yoga poses in the first half of this workshop. (10:00-1:00, $55)

In the second half of the workshop Karla will teach effective assists for yoga poses applying her knowledge as an Alexander Teacher, dancer, and teacher of functional anatomy. Sometimes a small shift in the angle of a wrist and hand or the balance of the head on the spine can ease up other tensions in the body. Learn what to look for and how to do gentle hands-on adjustments with your students. (2:00-5:00, $55)
